A Busy Hospital Season Calls for Diligent Hand Hygiene

Hospitals often see an uptick in visits during the winter months for various reasons – especially to the emergency room. Patients can be treated for a variety of weather-related injuries, influenza, pneumonia and other respiratory disorders. Congested and busy emergency departments lend to rapid infection-spread, and it can be easy for rushed physicians to forget, or feel pressed for time, keeping them from practicing proper hand hygiene. No matter what the reason for a patient’s visit to the emergency room – a broken bone from a mishap while stringing the holiday lights, or the flu that Uncle Bob shared during his recent visit – clinicians must be extra diligent about hand hygiene in the winter months.
