As we all know, International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) is upon us.  It is a time to  bring awareness to infection rates and highlight the easiest and most effective way to reduce them through hand hygiene.  It’s common knowledge that germs are most frequently spread patient to patient on the hands of health care workers so improving hand hygiene compliance in healthcare settings is the best way to prevent the spread of infections.

Former President Bill Clinton once said “…the risk of doing the same old thing is far higher than the cost of change.”

Nothing is truer than when it comes to infection prevention. And as advocates for proper hand hygiene, we know all too well that change is needed. While International Infection Prevention Week and other similar awareness events do a fine job at sharpening the focus on the critical need for change, we know that the work needed to be done to create the necessary change will continue on long after IIPW 2014 comes to a close tomorrow.
