In union there is strength; there is no “I” in team; no man is an island – all these are phrases you have most likely heard before. But have you ever stopped to think about the very meaningful message behind them and how they may relate to improvements in healthcare? They are actually more relevant than you think as teamwork is one of the main drivers you need to form lasting behavior change that leads to improvement. An example of this was seen at Emory Healthcare in Georgia, where they developed a care transformation model that encouraged their staff to improve teamwork and collaboration. “Once caregivers learned to function as a team, quality improvements immediately followed.”

Group Monitoring Encourages Teamwork, Which Leads to Greater Rates of Hand Hygiene

Positive partnerships and teamwork are essential to creating a happy, healthy environment in any work place. Therefore, it was no surprise to learn that collaboration is key to better hand hygiene rates, according to a new study published in Critical Care Nurse magazine. The five-year analysis shows a correlation between high levels of collaboration among nurses and physicians directly and decreased rates of healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs).
