Hospitalization is traumatizing enough for an adult, but imagine what it’s like for a child to be admitted to a hospital for any length of time. Unfortunately many children face this reality. In the United States, more than 3 million children get hospitalized every year. The Emergency Department at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario Canada sees 58,000 patients a year, making it one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in the country. It isn’t surprising that kids are more susceptible to illnesses as their immune systems are weak at a young age, in fact, at any given time in Canada, 8% of children are affected by a hospital-acquired infection. It is also normal for children to get sick with nearly eight upper respiratory infections and two gastrointestinal infections each year!
